This workshop will bring together practitioners and experts in probation and other fields of criminal justice, to understand: how to improve the support of those with learning or communication difficulties; and the risks and challenges presented by the push for universally available restorative justice.

About the workshop

At the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies, we have been researching and reporting on practice and policy in the field of community measures and sentences for over a decade. This workshop is one of two all day events at which we bring together experts to discuss recent work in important areas of probation practice.

The practice of supervision for those with learning and communication difficulties, and the use of restorative justice, have each developed rapidly in recent times. Both areas of practice present opportunities as well as challenges for police, prosecutors, sentencers, probation professionals and public and private sector organisations delivering rehabilitation programmes. The changes introduced by Transforming Rehabilitation and associated legislation are an important aspect of these challenges.

Background

The Centre for Crime and Justice Studies is the UK partner in an EU-funded project examining alternatives to custody in Europe. This project takes a critical look at the available statistics and other evidence of current practices across eight EU states including the UK. It addresses the widespread over-use and growing punitiveness of alternative sanctions and their failure to reduce prison numbers or re-convictions. It aims to identify policies and practices that could reverse this trend and help to turn around our over-reliance on incarceration and excessive control and supervision.

Our first workshop was held on 10 June and focused on the political climate around community measures, the work of women's centres, maturity assessments for young adults, and electronic monitoring. You can see footage and presentations from that event here.
